"Utilizing the correct materials is essential
to your success as an artist." - J.M.
Special Note: Students - please be certain to call ahead to your store location well before your class date to determine if pre-packaged materials kits are currently available (to be safe, purchase the kits at least one day before the class). If not, please see the list below to purchase your own supplies individually. Also, remember bring a water container for brushes, paper towels, and carbon paper for tracing. You will also want to gesso your painting board beforehand with Liquitex Gess, Artists Acrylic in order to obtain the correct painting surface (see below for instructions).
One of the first mistakes new artists sometimes make is to skimp on their supplies, often trying to make do with old materials or a partial list of supplies taken from what they have on hand at the moment. This changes the classroom experience dramatically. To avoid problems, please follow the materials lists provided here very closely. This will ensure your enjoyment of the process of painting to the fullest measure.
Because we are now teaching classes at more than one type of venue, there are 2 lists of materials to choose from, depending on the location of your workshop. If you are taking a class at Hobby Lobby, the store in which the workshop is being held has pre-packaged materials especially prepared for our students. These packets will be for sale at a special discounted price, so be sure to ask for the McNaughton Workshop Kit, which should be available for purchase prior to the class.
Each one of the art items listed has been personally approved by Jon McNaughton. Please avoid substituting brands, as they may or may not be suitable to our curriculum. Also, please note the "other suggested items" list for both classes, located at the bottom of the page (preparing your painting surface correctly is especially important!)
The materials below will be included in the McNaughton Workshop pre-prepared packet:
Misc. items:
Snap Top Case
Pallette Paper
Windsor & Newton Artist Gloss Varnish
One 11x14 prepared Masonite painting board
* Note: A good number easels are available on a complimentary basis to students, but we still suggest you consider bringing your own if desired.

Brushes
There are four brushes required for the class. Please select the following brushes or something comparable:
0 round fine point brush, bright
1/4 " flat brush, bright
1/2 " flat brush, bristle
1" flat brush, bristle
Please bring your own easel if you have one (you'll need one for your work at home in any case). These can be purchased at Hobby Lobby or other locations for just a few dollars. A small, desktop easel will do as we will be painting on 11x 14 hardboards. If you cannot bring an easel we will have some extras to provide.
The following will be included in your pre-prepared McNaughton MasterpieceWorkshop packet:
Misc. items included in the Hobby Lobby packet
Snap Top Case
Paper Pallette
Windsor & Newton Artist Gloss Varnish
One 11x14 prepared Masonite painting board: Special note: This board has a "slick" surface, which is not idea for our style of painting. We recommend that you purchase "Liquitex" brand gesso "Artist Acrylic" style. Applying one coat to a white, slick surface will suffice. If your board is unprepared brown masonite, two coats will be necessary. (If you should decide to purchase board from a lumber store, ask for "two sided, tempered masonite", either 1/8 or 1/4 " thick, cut into 11x14).
ADDITIONAL items you will need for your class (at either location) which are not a part of the prepared packets
Bring a jar or small bucket of water to hold your brushes. You may also wish to obtain a "brush holder" to preserve your brush points.
Optional colors you may want to include in your paints: Raw Sienna and Thalo Blue (these are not included in the prepared packets).
- Wear suitable clothes for painting, or wear an artist's smock.
- Paper Towels
- Pencil
- Carbon (tracing) paper (pre-cut to 11x14)
- Scotch Tape
- The optional paint colors mentioned above are seldom used but may be helpful as you develop your skills over time. Thalo blue is the most often used of these.
- If you need specific supplies, or, are looking for a pre-prepared packet, it's helpful to ask the store Sales Clerk to assist you well before the day of class. In addition, please refer to the McNaughton Workbook to receive further helpful instructions (available for purchase on website).
