Title:

I Would Have Gathered Thee

“Toward the end of the Savior’s ministry He stood on the Mount of Olives and lamented His beloved Jerusalem. He said, “O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not.” (Matthew 23:27). I imagine Jesus leaning against an old olive tree along the road to Bethany which wound its way through the Mount of Olives. He looks down at the temple and feels sadness and disappointment for His chosen people. They had rejected his prophets and soon would reject Him, having Him to be crucified outside the city. I wanted this painting to feel authentic in every way. From the layout of the ancient city to the gesture and costume of the Savior and the feelings it conveys. His clothing is that of a traveler and his feet are tired and dusty. He will soon walk down that path to face the purpose of His birth.”
