Nauvoo Remembered
“This painting is based on a true setting from an old daguerreotype picture of early Nauvoo. I wanted to take this picture and bring it to life. Nauvoo means “city beautiful” and was the Zion of the early saints. At its time, it rivaled Chicago as the largest city in Illinois. I chose to paint this scene in the fall with its fiery red leaves to signal the coming of winter and although a beautiful time of year, we know hard times are ahead. The temple is lit by the light of heaven and the deep clouds of a storm approach. It wouldn’t be long before the saints would be forced to leave their homes and come west to build their new homes in the valley of the Great Salt Lake.”
